Access requests

People who signed up and confirmed their email address. The chip beside a name is the family page they signed up on, and approving grants exactly that page — not the whole tree. Change it below their name first if they should have something else. They get an email either way. This gives no NAS access, and no ability to change the tree unless you grant it in Tree accounts.

Family tree accounts

Everyone who has signed up, whatever state they're in. Removing an account frees the email address to sign up again. Can see limits someone to one or more of the four sides of the family — the tree stays whole, they are just shown their part of it. Viewing and Changing set what they may do; each is enforced on the server, so anything switched off is not sent to them at all rather than merely hidden. Taking something away applies on their very next click. A download is cut to exactly the same sides and details as their view. The private note is for you alone and is never emailed to anyone.

Face ID and fingerprints

A passkey is a key your phone or laptop keeps and will only use after checking your face, fingerprint or PIN. Nothing to type, nothing here worth stealing, and it cannot be used on a copy of this site. Signing in with one is also what allows changes - a password sign-in can look at everything and change nothing. Your password still works for looking, so a lost device cannot lock you out.
Requests for access nothing waiting
When somebody with an account asks for something they do not have — the cameras, say — it turns up here. Approving grants it straight away; there is nothing else to remember to do.
Private folders hidden from everyone but the people you choose
A folder listed here is not in the file library for anyone except the accounts you tick. It does not appear in the listing, and asking for it directly gets the same answer as a path that does not exist. Admins always see everything.

NAS users

The NAS stays invite-only — accounts here are created by you, never by sign-up. These are separate from family tree accounts.

Invite someone to the NAS

Email

Sign-up codes, the notice that someone is creating an account, and the approved/declined replies all go out from here.

Unsent mail

Anything that couldn't be emailed is written here instead of being lost — including confirmation codes, so a sign-up can still be completed while email is being set up.

Families

Each family has its own page and its own sign-ins. Someone who belongs to one family cannot sign in on another's page — move them here if they should. The whole tree is the master page and opens everything.

People in the tree

Everyone in the tree, and which family pages they appear on. Search by any part of a name.

Undo a change to the tree

Every change writes a snapshot first, so anything can be put back. Restoring takes a snapshot of what is there now before it replaces it — so if you restore the wrong one, you can restore your way back out again.

Switches

Everything the site can be told to do or not do. Each one takes effect immediately and applies to everyone except you — turning something off can never lock you out of the panel that turns it back on.

The machine

How the server itself is doing and what is running on it. You can restart a service from here without needing a terminal. For full control from anywhere — a real shell, the files, everything — connect your computer to Tailscale; this machine is already on it.

This machine keeps up to ten minutes of recent writes in memory before putting them on the card, which saves wear on it. Flush writes them out now.

There is deliberately no reboot button. This board does not reliably restart in software — asked to reboot, it went down and stayed down for twenty minutes until the power was pulled by hand. If you ever need to restart the whole machine, press Flush first, then unplug it and plug it back in. It comes back on its own in about 40 seconds, with everything running.

Home Watch cameras

The cameras at home, at benning.vip/homewatch. It has its own sign-in, separate from every account here: a password and a six-digit code from an authenticator app. The cameras and their passwords are never reachable from the internet — the video is passed through this machine, and only to someone signed in to Home Watch.

Backup drive

A second disk holding an exact copy of the media drive. Once a week it checks whether anything on the media drive has changed. If it has, the backup drive is woken, the changes are copied, and it goes straight back to sleep. If nothing changed, the backup drive is not woken at all. The site never reads from it.

Everything running on this machine

Start, stop and restart anything here, and choose what comes back after a power cut. The four marked essential can be restarted but not stopped — they are how you reach this machine, and turning one off from a web page is how you end up walking over to it. Restarting Benning NAS restarts this site: the page goes quiet for a few seconds, signs you out, and comes back on its own.
